Sports - Brown vs Smith debate

Here's a little uncut e-mail debate for WV fans to read between me and a much more knowledgeable WV fan (Ryan, I hope you don't mind my using your material, I saw no copyright):

I'm sticking with JB, and I have to assume that most WVU fans (>80%) would agree with me. I am not ready to give up on JB yet, he is still rough around the edges but deserves this shot. He is reckless at times but still gives us the best chance to win in my opinion. I agree that Smith is capable and his development would pay dividends next season but I don't think he wins more games than JB this season. I guess I feel loyal to JB given that he stuck around for 4 years and I still believe that he can get the job done.
I have a feeling Smith will be starting this weekend, so it will be interesting to see what he can do with a week to prepare and a gameplan designed for him. Once JB comes back though he is still the starter, I don't forsee a QB controversy.

Agreed no QB controversy because Stew doesn't have the guts for it. If I remember correctly, didn't it take an injury to get Pat White on the field full time? At this point I agree that you have to go with whoever gives you the best shot at winning. The Mountaineers are still in contention for the Big East title. I'm just not sure who that is. Both have risks. I wish both of them would run a little more. The QB has to be a running threat for the offense to be explosive. If I were the coach I'd start Smith this week and blame it on Brown's injury. If Brown is healthy enough to play, I'd suit him up just in case, but say we'd rather give him another week to heal. Then I'd be hoping that Smith played really well and wins over the public opinion so that I can hand him the job without a riot. Because right now I agree with you that >80% would vote the same way you did. Brown's turnovers have just been too much for me. He's proven to me that turnovers are the norm for him, not the exception.

  1. What does Pat White having to wait for an injury to the old starting QB to become WVUs greatest QB have anything to do with this situation? Answer: NOTHING. Eugene Smith does not equal PW. End of discussion. Oh and by the way, that was a different coaching staff so Stew's guts had nothing to do with that (more on that later.)

Further at the time of White's installation as QB it was very much a battle between a Sophmore Bednarik (spelling???)and Redshirt Freshman White. This is not the case this year. 5th year SR Brown vs TRUE Freshman Smith. I'll take a 5th year SR 9 out of ten times over a true freshman. Oh and by the way I'll bet you $50 Brown gets drafted.

Your statement about Stew having no guts just goes to show that no matter what this man does (short of winning a national title) fans like you will continue to hate on him. He has more wins than any other coach in as many games in WVU history FACT. He has had better recruiting classes than DickROD ever had FACT. He will be coaching at WVU after the Product Rodriguez is dropped by scUM and runs off on his gay honeymoon with John Belying. Soon to be FACT.

Don't get me wrong, Bill Stewart is no Bear Bryant, but he isn't Steve Kragthorpe either.

I think Eugene Smith will be a great football player for WVU... next year. Don't throw the kid into the fire this year when we have a QB who can get us 8-9 wins maybe more and possibly a conference title this year. Oh and give the coaching staff a chance D'bag.

    As always your friend Wayne

  2. Stew was 8-4 with "WV greatest QB" and decent talent around him in a down year for the Big East. He's 6-1 this year, but soon will face some tough test and likely will be around the 8-4 mark again. He inherited a winning tradition and some talent. His start, despite your facts, is not impressive. Rod inherited a team in shambles and good old Donnie was there for ages, so there's not much competition. I remember Willingham running off 10 or 11 wins his first year at ND. Ask Ryan how that turned out. I'm not saying that Stew will suffer the same fate, his start has been pedestrian and the verdict is still out on him.
